Holy Rood Catholic Primary School

Mathematics in our school is taught daily for all children. Teachers use a variety of teaching and learning techniques in mathematics lessons to engage all children and to ensure good progress for all. Our aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in mathematics through a combination whole-class and group-direct teaching as well as structured intervention when necessary. In the EYFS, KS1 and KS2, children are taught to use a wide range of practical and physical resources such as number lines, number squares, digit cards, Numicon, small whiteboards and small apparatus to support their work. It is expected that children will independently seek out these resources to help them in the future. The development of mental fluency begins in KS1 with simple number bonds and fact recall, before progressing into KS2 with the development of mental strategies which impacts on the speed and accuracy of all mathematical calculations such as secure times tables knowledge. It is also important at our school that all children learn to apply their mathematical knowledge to real-life and practical problems and investigations from Nursery up to year 6.
